Twenty-nine students affected by the Marawi siege in 2017 have been awarded scholarships by the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).
The DOST announced from its office on General Santos Avenue, Bicutan, Taguig, that these scholarships were granted to qualified second-year students enrolled in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, who were affected by the armed conflict or forced to evacuate from Marawi, Lanao del Sur due to the war.
The 'Rise Again Marawi' Program in Science and Technology Human Resource Development (STHRD) aims to provide hope to the youth in the aftermath of the Marawi war.
The 29 qualified scholarship students will receive a monthly allowance of ₱7,000, books and other school materials, and a ₱10,000 connectivity allowance each academic year.
DOST-SEI Director Dr. Josette Biyo stated that STEM could potentially solve various societal problems. "While the 'Rise Again Marawi' Program is here, I encourage all students to seize the opportunity to pursue meaningful STEM careers and contribute to Marawi's revival."
Upon completing their courses, the 'Rise Again Marawi' scholars are expected to work within their specializations in the country, particularly in their region, for an estimated four years or the equivalent time they spent as scholars.
The 'Rise Again Marawi' Program, which began in 2018, has already graduated 369 students with bachelor's degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, 14 in master's programs, and 4 PhD scholar-graduates.
