Three student scholars from Taguig recently brought honor to the Philippines after competing in international science and mathematics competitions. The students were duly recognized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Awards.
Among these students is Taguig resident Filbert Ephraim Wu, a student at the Victory Christian International School, along with classmates Andre Gerard Aw and Rickson Caleb Tan, from MGC New Life Christian Academy located at 14th Drive, University Parkway, Bonifacio Global City, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.
Students from the Philippine Science High School, Ateneo de Manila High School, Jubilee Christian Academy, and Saint Jude Catholic School were also recipients of the YES award, bringing home 5 silver medals, 14 bronze medals, and 3 honorable mentions.
According to DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, the YES medal is a symbol of the brilliant achievements of our youth in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), which contribute to fostering a stronger culture of science in the country and producing more STEM professionals.
"The medals you have won are the fruits of your perseverance and excellence - wear them with pride. While they are a reminder of your immense potential and the even greater heights you can still achieve, never forget that the true essence of excellence should be used to uplift the lives of the Filipino people. The country needs minds like yours, now more than ever, to lead research and development, and to become beacons of hope to accelerate science and technology development," Solidum proclaimed.
Wu, who represented the winning students, expressed profound gratitude for DOST's support and their experience in the competition, which further honed their critical and analytical skills and inspired them to pursue careers in STEM.
"It must begin with widespread awareness and encouragement for students across the Philippines to take on the challenge," Wu shared, reflecting on his experience in the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad and the 35th International Olympiad in Informatics.
Wu stated that it was an honor to represent both his fellow Filipinos and the country in various academic tournaments related to STEM.
