Six hundred kilograms of trash were collected by approximately fifty trucks of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in their recent clean-up of Hagonoy Creek at the Hagonoy Pumping Station in Taguig City.

The garbage collected by the MMDA from the creek originated from nine barangays in Taguig City, where they dispose of their waste, causing flooding, especially during the rainy season.

"Solid waste management is everyone's responsibility, not just the government's. All of us must work together and ensure that waste is properly managed and disposed of to prevent flooding," stated MMDA acting chairman Don Artes, after personally witnessing the clean-up, alongside Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano.

Artes appealed to the public to stop littering on the streets and bodies of water to prevent the accumulation of waste in water channels, which leads to flooding.

"While we are boosting our efforts in clean-up operations to mitigate flooding, the public must do their part by observing cleanliness and proper waste disposal. A key to effective solid waste management is segregating waste at the source and having effective garbage collection done at the local level," Artes added.

Cayetano, on the other hand, warned that littering on streets and bodies of water is punishable by fines according to their ordinance in Taguig. It is alarming, she said, that even large items such as sofas and appliances are being dumped in Hagonoy Creek.

Both Artes and Cayetano pleaded with the public to be responsible for their waste disposal.
