The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned of dangerous sea level increases and storm surge in the coastal areas of the Bicol Region and other parts of the country with the arrival of Typhoon Pepito (international name: Man-Yi). The typhoon is expected to make landfall in Catanduanes in the evening of November 16, 2024, or the morning of November 17.
Storm surge in Catanduanes is anticipated to reach up to 12 meters today. Meanwhile, the eastern coasts of Albay, Sorsogon, and Eastern Samar, as well as the northern and eastern coasts of Northern Samar, are expected to experience an 8-meter surge.
Sea levels along the eastern coast of Camarines Sur are predicted to rise by 5.5 meters while the northern coast of Camarines Sur will face a rise of 4.5 meters. The Dinagat Islands are also expected to experience a storm surge of up to 4 meters, while Surigao del Sur and Siargao Islands could see water levels reach 3.5 meters.
Typhoon Pepito continues to intensify as it moves west-northwest over the Philippine Sea, east of Eastern Visayas.
The center of the typhoon was estimated to be 305 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar (11.5 °N, 128.5 °E ) as of 10:00 PM last night. It is moving at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour.
It is carrying winds at a speed of 155 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 190 kilometers per hour. It is expected to slightly weaken as it passes over Central Luzon but will remain in the typhoon category.
PAGASA also warned of heavy rain along the path of Typhoon Pepito in the next three days. The typhoon is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday, November 18.
