Dogs and other animals also have the right to live safely, and their lives can be extended through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.

This was the motive behind the special CPR and first aid training for canines and other animals at the Taguig Center for Disaster Management in Barangay Central Signal last Friday, August 4.

The Office of the City Veterinarian and the Taguig City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) joined forces, in cooperation with the All-Breed Association Philippines K9 Inc. (ABAPK9). They trained 35 individuals from the Taguig City DRRMO, City Health Office, and the Office of the City Veterinarian to be prepared to provide immediate relief to dogs and other animals in the city.

Part of the training involved learning how to treat wounds, fractures, and other medical issues of animals.

They were also taught effective methods of managing critical situations such as heatstroke and poisoning in animals. The training included how to rescue an animal that has a blocked throat and cannot breathe, is drowning, or involved in fights with other animals.

Additional skills such as dog grooming practices and methods to prevent ticks and other pests that infest them were also taught.
