DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos stated that they had written to the Supreme Court as early as May 3, 2023, to guide them in implementing the decision regarding the ten barangays affected by the territorial dispute between Taguig and Makati.
While awaiting further court orders, Abalos said they have already formed transition teams to address the requirements for the proper transfer of territory.
"Comelec Chairman George Garcia and I agree that it's imperative to take action because there's not much time left before the elections. We respect the Supreme Court's definition of the cities' territorial boundaries and are coordinating accordingly," Abalos said.
In relation to the agencies under the jurisdiction of the DILG, Abalos said they are also coordinating with the heads of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to modify the areas of their responsibility and where they will report after the transfer of jurisdiction from the former District two of Makati to Taguig.
These actions, according to Abalos, only cover the issue of territorial governance. "As for specific rights or obligations over affected property, these will be dealt with in accordance with the procedure provided by law. We will also respect any further court orders in this regard."
In September of the previous year, the Supreme Court made a final decision in the Makati vs. Taguig case confirming that the Fort Bonifacio Military Reservation, covering Parcels 3 and 4, Psu-2031, is part of Taguig City, not Makati City.
