The Department of Science and Technology's Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) is set to build a new, safer, and more modern facility at the DOST South Complex in Bicutan, Taguig City.
According to DOST-FNRI, their current building, located in the DOST North Complex, sits directly on the West Valley Fault.
"We have surveyed various areas here, particularly within the DOST compound. We have found that the [FNRI] is situated on top of the West Valley Fault," stated DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. to reporters during the groundbreaking ceremony at DOST South Complex in Bicutan, Taguig City on January 8.
As reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, or Phivolcs, the 90-kilometer West Valley Fault, which runs through various provinces and Metro Manila, poses a significant risk when it shifts and a strong earthquake occurs. This movement typically happens every 400 to 600 years.
The P2 billion new DOST building, which is more modern, safer, resistant to earthquakes, and environment-friendly, is expected to be completed within 3 to 5 years.
Solidum advised that even people in other buildings and houses situated above the West Valley Fault should consider relocating and avoid constructing structures on this fault.
"In fact, in our initial work, even schools that were planned to be built on the West Valley Fault were advised not to proceed with construction or planning, to ensure the safety of the building's future users," Solidum stated.
