The city government of Taguig has fulfilled its promise to extend help to the new residents of the city in the EMBO (Enlisted Men's Barrio) barangays by providing scholarship allowances to 387 new Lifeline Assistance for Neighbors In-need (LANI) Scholarship beneficiaries from these barangays.
The scholars received amounts ranging from P15,000 to P110,000, depending on the type of their scholarship.
Those with a semestral weighted average of 88.75 and above received an additional P5,000.
These 387 residents from the EMBO barangays are just the first batch of scholars to receive their allowances.
There are now around 5,000 applicants for the scholarship allowance from the EMBO barangays.
Before the distribution, the city government of Taguig sent out invitations and reminders to students qualified for the program. Accepted applicants were also notified by email.
Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano assured that all students who wish to complete their college education will be able to fulfill their goal of finishing technical-vocational courses or degree in college or even post-graduate studies.
Not only the top 10 percent in schools are given scholarships but also all those who wish to continue their studies after high school.
"We opened the scholarship program to all who want to study and continue college. In Taguig, we recognize that there are different kinds of intelligence and it is not measured in academic excellence alone. We believe that your gifts or your talents in art, music or sports are also a form of intelligence," said Cayetano.
One of the recipients of the scholarship allowance is Ron Alvin Balbuena, a 4th year Information Technology student at the University of Makati and a resident of West Rembo.
According to Balbuena, in the scholarship program in Makati that used to cover them in West Rembo, only those with high grades can get a scholarship allowance.
"You need to reach the required grade especially in major subjects," Balbuena shared.
Balbuena said that the scholarship allowance given by Taguig will help lessen his parents' worries about additional school expenses.
His mother, Susan, said that the scholarship allowance is a great help to them.
"Sometimes I can't provide him with what he needs for school. Now I won't have to worry because the LANI scholarship has covered it. Thank you very much."
Mayor Cayetano believes in investing in education.
"Investing in education is investing in the city's strong foundation," the mayor added.
The city government of Taguig has already helped over 83,000 scholars and has also produced more than 3,500 licensed professionals. Over 50 of these have placed in the Top 10 in board exams, including the topnotcher in the latest Registered Electrical Engineering Board, and second place in the Criminology Board.
