Jamaica Star Seraspe was bitten by a stray dog on February 9, 2024, while on her way home from her school in Tondo. Instead of revealing the truth, she told her parents that she merely scraped herself on some metal, hence she was not taken to a doctor.
Two months later, she exhibited serious symptoms, including fever, back pain, constant fatigue, and an inability to drink water. According to her mother, Roselyn, they only rushed Jamaica to San Lazaro Hospital on April 5, 2024, when she finally disclosed what happened, but her condition was rapidly deteriorating by then.
It got to a point where they had to restrain Jamaica as she was becoming increasingly agitated due to intense body pain, until her demise the following day, April 6. Jamaica died of rabies encephalitis.
In a post shared by Jamaica's mother, she reminded fellow parents to closely monitor children for scratches and any unusual behavior. She urged them not to neglect even minor scratches from cats or dogs, given the seriousness of rabies.
The City Government of Taguig has a program to prevent the spread of rabies among animals through free house-to-house rabies vaccination.
On September 25, 26, and October 2, 3, and 4, 2024, the group from the Office of the City Veterinarian will personally administer the anti-rabies vaccine to the animals in Barangay South Signal.
