The Philippine National Police (PNP) initiated the setup of checkpoints throughout the country yesterday, January 12, 2025, following the enforcement of the gun ban as per the directive of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).
The prohibition on carrying firearms outside homes is part of maintaining peace during the election period leading up to the 2025 midterm elections on May 12, 2025.
In Taguig City, checkpoints have been established at MACDA J.P. Rizal Extension, Barangay Cembo, and Rizal Drive corner 32nd Ave. Bonifacio Global City (BGC), personally witnessed by our Taguig.com reporter, Jayson Pulga.
COMELEC Chairman George Erwin Garcia stated that there would be exceptions to those allowed to carry guns outside if it's part of their job, such as law enforcement officers. They will need to obtain an exemption certificate from COMELEC.
Those who violate the gun ban may be charged with election law violations and possibly face imprisonment of one to six years.
The checkpoints are for visual inspection only, and police are not allowed to open the storage or trunk or glove compartment of vehicles. Drivers cannot be asked to exit their vehicles for a pat-down.
Already four individuals have been apprehended since the enforcement of the gun ban yesterday. The gun ban is set to end on June 11, 2025.
