Makati City's second seat in the Lower House of Congress could potentially be lost, while Taguig City may gain a third seat following the Supreme Court's decision to transfer ten barangays from the second district of Makati to Taguig.
This emerges from the Supreme Court's ruling that Fort Bonifacio and ten other barangays in Makati's second district are owned by Taguig City.
Parañaque Congressman Gus Tambunting, chairman of the House Legislative Franchise committee, stated that with the transfer of more than 300,000 residents from the second district of Makati to Taguig, it is crucial to address the issue of new representation.
"This sets the stage for the potential abolition of a legislative district," Tambunting said, as the second district of Makati would fall below the required 250,000 resident coverage.
The remaining areas in Makati's second district are Guadalupe Nuevo, Guadalupe Viejo, and Pinagkaisahan. The second district of Makati is represented in Congress by Congressman Luis Campos Jr., husband of Makati Mayor Abby Binay.
If Fort Bonifacio and ten barangays from the second district are transferred to Taguig, they will be represented by Congresswoman Amaro Maria Zamora, who has over 800,000 constituents.
Meanwhile, Taguig-Pateros is represented by Congressman Ricardo Cruz.
According to Tambunting, it is necessary to resolve the apportionment of these legislative districts and for the political branches of the government to make a decision, as it directly affects representation and the democratic rights of the citizens.
