The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) will once again be implementing an increase in its electricity rates this March.
The increase is set at P0.0229 per kilowatt hour (kWh), implying that the typical household will see an increase to P11.9397 per kWh this month from P11.9168 per kWh in February.
If a residential customer consumes 200 kWh, their electricity bill would likely see an estimated increase of P5.00.
Even though electricity rates are increasing, the increase is still relatively minor due to a decrease in the generation charge, according to Meralco.
The significant upward adjustment in the transmission charge was somewhat offset by the decreasing generation charge, as stated by Meralco Vice President Joe Zaldarriaga.
There is a decrease of P0.3518 per kWh in the generation charge this month.
Meralco clarified that they merely pass on changes in generation and transmission charges because these are paid to power suppliers and grid operators.
Taxes, universal charges, and the Feed-In Tariff Allowance or FIT-All are then passed on to the government.
Meralco's consumers pay the distribution charge, which Meralco states has not changed since it was reduced by P0.0360 per kWh in August 2022.
