This is in line with the commencement of the election period to be held this May.

The implementation of the nationwide gun ban, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP), is to ensure peace and order during the election period.

"This coming Sunday, January 12, is the start of the election period. We remind the public that we will start our nationwide gun ban on the same day," said PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo.

The only individuals permitted to carry firearms are bona fide police officers, military personnel, and members of government law enforcement agencies who are in full uniform and on official duty.

Those who wish to obtain an exemption from the gun ban need to coordinate with the Commission on Elections Committee on Ban on Firearms and Security Concerns.

"For those not included in the executive list of exemptions, if they wish to bring firearms outside of their respective residences and places of business, they have to apply for a certificate of authority from Comelec so that they can be exempted," Fajardo said.

A few weeks ago, PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil ordered an intensified campaign against armed groups and illegal weapons.
