Members of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) who have suffered a stroke can now avail benefits of up to P80,000, an increase from the previous P38,000 coverage.

This announcement was made by PhilHealth on November 20, in response to the rising number of stroke cases and sudden hospitalisations due to the condition.

Stroke is the second leading cause of death in the country, with 70% of fatalities resulting from ischemic stroke, a condition caused by a blockage in the blood vessels leading to the brain.

Meanwhile, 30% of fatalities arise from hemorrhagic strokes, which occur when a blood vessel ruptures in the brain.

Recognising the financial hardship endured by patients seeking treatment after a stroke, PhilHealth has revised the benefits for ischemic stroke patients from P28,000 to P76,000.

For victims of hemorrhagic stroke, the hospital expenses will be covered up to P80,000, a significant increase from the previous P38,000 limit.

The enhancement of these benefits is part of PhilHealth's ongoing commitment to the Universal Health Care Act.
