The leadership of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) met with the Philippine Cancer Society (PCS) to discuss improving health service training programs, particularly in the areas of patient navigation, cancer registration, and palliative care. The meeting took place at the TESDA office in Taguig City on Friday, December 6, 2024.
Representing PCS was Medical Oncologist and Board Director Dr. Kelly Salvador. The meeting with TESDA, led by Director General, Secretary Jose Francisco Kiko Benitez, centered on discussing primary training programs for health personnel, particularly in the field of cancer care.
Patient navigation is a service that facilitates immediate consultation, diagnosis, and treatment for cancer patients and those suffering from other severe illnesses by removing barriers to these services.
Palliative care aims to comfort patients in terminal condition despite their illness.
Salvador outlined potential areas where PCS could help strengthen health services, particularly enhancing the capacity of healthcare professionals.
Competency standards in caregiving, particularly for patients in terminal condition, will also be developed through training at TESDA.
PCS also suggested the creation of micro-credentials in cancer registry, palliative care, and patient navigation, suitable for hospitals and other institutions treating cancer.
Likewise, those who complete the training will receive joint certification from TESDA and PCS.
There will also be an assessment created for palliative care.
