Senator Alan Peter Cayetano calls on the public to support the new generation of Youth Council (SK) leaders rather than demanding the abolition of this youth governance system.
Cayetano made this call after the recent election of new SK chairmen and councilmen during the Barangay and Youth Council Elections, in which Cayetano voted in his hometown, Taguig City.
"We often say let's abolish the SK because it has become a breeding ground for corruption. But who teaches them corruption? Isn't it the adults too? Why should the youth be abolished? That's backwards!" Cayetano stated.
"Let's continue with the SK, but let's help, monitor, and support them. Let's not abandon them. Give advice to them, and let's pray for them," the senator added.
The senator also mentioned that the new batch of SK leaders are part of the "social media generation", therefore their perspective on governance is quite different. "I'm excited for them, but I always want to make sure there is accountability."
"Whoever among us has the gift or talent to mentor the youth, let's help this new generation. What we sow this year, we will reap 20 years from now," concluded Cayetano.
