Respiratory infectious diseases indeed tend to increase in China during the winter and spring, according to Kan Biao, a Chinese official who spoke at a news conference. However, based on past data, he said the current numbers are still lower than they were in 2023.
Among the recorded respiratory infectious diseases in China this past December were rhinovirus and human metapneumovirus, which mainly affected children under 14, particularly in the northern provinces.
hMPV is a common respiratory virus that causes upper respiratory infections like colds.
There is no vaccine against hMPV, but patients typically recover on their own. However, it can also be fatal if neglected or if symptoms worsen.
