The Taguig City Health Office garnered both the first-place prize and People's Choice Award in the Department of Health's Expanded Newborn Screening Social Media Advocacy Contest.
With the theme, "Save the Baby from Mental Retardation and Early Death, Expanded Newborn Screening is Important," the Taguig City Health Office claimed not just the first-place prize but also the people's favorite award for their music video entry entitled "Show Baby Love."
The piece was written by Vaughn Geuseppe Alviar and performed by fellow Taguig residents, Samantha Gabrielle Juta-Bergado and Christine Kirsty Reyes Arriola.
The video emphasized the importance of newborn screening, a procedure that helps detect potential health problems in newborns, including mental retardation and 28 other metabolic disorders.
Early detection through newborn screening allows prompt intervention, reducing infant mortality.
Newborn screening is free for all newborn Taguig residents as a way of supporting new mothers and their babies.
Officials from the Taguig City Health Office, led by Dr. Norena R. Osano, received the two awards on October 28, 2024, from the DOH.
From October 8-11, 2024, the Newborn Screening Awareness Week was held, during which a gathering of 206 pregnant women from various barangays took place.
The events were conducted at Plaza 7 Covered Court, Barangay North Signal; Ligid Covered Court, Barangay Ligid-Tipas; Taguig Pateros District Hospital, and the Novicio Building, Barangay Upper Bicutan, Taguig City.
The pregnant attendees received token bags filled with ascorbic acid, calcium, and iron plus folic acid supplements.
