Five hundred students and staff members of the Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) - Taguig City gathered for the Ating Dibdibin Goes to U: University Caravan on November 15, 2024, Friday.
The said caravan travels to universities in Taguig City to raise awareness and also to check students for breast lumps, which are often the origin of cancer.
Dr. Cecille Montales, the current Executive Assistant for Health of Taguig City, shared health information and her personal experience with breast cancer.
She also taught the students how to conduct a self-breast examination.
City Health Officer Head Dr. Norena Osano emphasized the importance of the program.
"According to the DOH, breast cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in the Philippines. That's why the Ating Dibdibin Program team is here with the CHO to provide comprehensive knowledge and raise awareness about breast cancer to our students and personnel here at TUP," Osano said.
Pink Crusader Virgie Baldevarona, a breast cancer survivor, also participated in the event by sharing her experiences.
"When I was diagnosed, I learned from one of my doctors about Mayor Lani's program for those with breast cancer. I approached our health center and they helped me with what I needed. Through the Ating Dibdibin Program, I felt reassured because I had someone with me in my treatment," said Baldevarona.
Self-examination is crucial to prevent the onset of cancer, according to the members of the Taguig City Health Office.
