The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has advised travelers to wear face masks when inside the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
This advisory comes in response to a bacteria currently spreading in Japan known as Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS).
Initial symptoms include fever, chills, muscle pain, dizziness, and vomiting. It is said that within only 24 to 48 hours of the onset of symptoms, blood pressure may drop, organs may fail, heart rate may increase, breathing may speed up, and there could be swelling of tissues in the body.
In the latest report from Japan dated June 2, 2024, there have been 977 cases of STSS, a significant increase compared to previous years.
However, the MIAA clarified that wearing face masks inside the airport is only a recommendation, not a requirement. They also encourage handwashing or the use of alcohol, as well as covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
The MIAA is currently coordinating with the Department of Health and the Bureau of Quarantine to monitor passengers entering the country.
