The two South Koreans, Kwon Hyuckkeun, 41, and You Hyun Tea, 53, were wanted in their home country for electronic financial fraud. They were put on a Korean Air flight to Incheon, South Korea on August 21, 2024, and handed over to the authorities in Korea.
"Our counterparts in Seoul were informed about their impending arrival there. Korean policemen apprehended them upon their arrival," said BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco.
The two had been under a deportation order since 2021 for being undesirable aliens and evading the law.
It was discovered that You had accomplices in operating an illegal online sports gambling site. They were able to extract money from their victims, promising a 30% return, but instead took off with 100 million won, roughly equivalent to US$82,000.
Kwon, on the other hand, allegedly operated a call center that conducted voice phishing to deceive victims into sending their debit cards to the suspect, who promised that their money would grow through loans.
The two were arrested by the BI in separate operations in May and June of this year.
