The clearing team seized the tables laid out under the bridge, which angered the vendors.
A couple, who rely on their vending business under the bridge for their livelihood, became emotional. They lamented that the operation was carried out just as Christmas was approaching.
Moreover, they claimed that they were only making an honest living, and thus should not be treated like thieves.
According to the MMDA, vending is prohibited in the lay-by under the bridge as it is meant only for emergencies and as a shelter for riders when it rains.
Gabriel Go, the Officer-in-Charge of the Special Operations Group Strike Force of the MMDA, said that they are not against the poor, they are simply implementing what is right.
Even the illegally parked vehicles under the bridge were not spared by the MMDA. They claimed that their goal is only to ensure road safety and to implement what is correct.
