Will Makati Mayor Abby Binay run for mayor of Taguig City in the 2025 elections?
This was the question posed to Binay by the media when she visited Pembo Elementary School yesterday, August 23, to distribute school supplies and uniforms to the students.
According to Binay, she is considering the option but has not yet made a decision due to its complexity.
"I have yet to cross that bridge. That is an option, but I have not decided because it would be a heavy and difficult task to run in Taguigespecially since I am not familiar with the place. Although we have a lot to offer and can do a lot for that city. But I need to ponder carefully, as my spouse and child have advised, because it will be a difficult decision to make," Binay stated.
In a separate interview, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia said that Binay could run in another city if she wishes.
"If she wants to run in another city, she can do so as long as she establishes residency and becomes a registered voter of that city. If she is an incumbent mayor of one city and wants to run in another, she would need to resign as mayor of her current city to establish a one-year residency in the other city," explained Garcia.
Binay distributed school supplies and uniforms for schools in the ten EMBO (Enlisted Men's Barrios) barangays after Makati City was granted permission by Vice President and Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sara Duterte, through a letter from DepEd Undersecretary Michael Poa.
Makati was also allowed to use the facilities of the 14 schools in the EMBO barangays, which are now under the jurisdiction of Taguig.
